Mooi River – Zulu Falls to Muden

This is another nice section for competent K1-paddlers and intermediate kayakers.

  • Ideal for: Kayak, K1, croc
  • Grade: 2 to 3
  • Length: 18 km
  • Duration: hours
  • Type: Pool-drop, narrow at places
  • Put-in: Just below Zulu Falls, on farm
  • Take-out: Bridge
  • Dam controlled: Midmar Dam
  • Permits: Ask permission at farm

MAP 35

The put-in is just below the spectacular high Zulu Falls (formerly called Mooi Falls).

From there a couple of narrow sections follow before the valley opens up somewhat. It will be neccesary to scout some of the rapids when paddling a K1, but everything is runnable.

One can go down all the way to Muden, or take out at a swingbridge 8km before that. K1 races are also held on the section from the swingbridge past Muden, where the river is mostly flat with small rapids.
