Tugela River – N3 to Colenso

This is an ideal section for beginner K1-paddlers to gain experience, and perfect for training.

  • Ideal for: K1
  • Grade: 1
  • Length: 22km
  • Duration: 2 to 3 hours
  • Type: Flat, small rapids
  • Put-in: N3
  • Take-out: Colenso
  • Dam controlled: Spioenkop Dam, but some tributaries feed the Tugela below dam
  • Permits: NoneMAP 38

The section begins just after the confluence of the Tugela and Little Tugela, and a paddleable level is maintained throughout the summer. One does not necessarily need too much water to do this section; it is very flat with a couple of small rapids. Although there is no rough water, the scenery is pretty and the bird life plentiful.

This river description is taken from my book “Run the Rivers of Southern Africa”.
